Four Decades Strong

The Beginning

It was 1980 when Don Fogel’s career in aluminum distribution led him to Basic Metals, Inc. (BMI). Hired as the very first employee, he invested in a 36 inch Paxton slitter and a machine operator to get the business started. Three years later Don’s son, Todd, graduated college and joined the Basic Metals team as employee number 3.

Todd and Don hustled to get the business off the ground. Transitioning between suits and shop overalls, they spent those early years learning the ins and outs of running a service center.

Growing Success

In 1985 the Fogel’s took a huge leap of faith – they approached ownership with a compelling proposal and purchased the assets of Basic Metals from Components International to become the sole owners.

With Todd and Don taking the lead, rapid growth took place. They invested in state-of the art Red Bud coil processing equipment. Built a 36,000 square foot facility in Germantown, Wisconsin. And Don’s tenacious, likeable personality aided in growing a robust customer base in the Midwest.

In 1999 Todd became sole owner of Basic Metals. Todd continued to steward the relationships that his dad built and invested in the company with a Mississippi warehouse, Germantown expansion, and new processing equipment.

Expanding

In 2010, Todd’s son, Andy, joined the Basic Metals team. Together, they expanded operations to Goodyear, Arizona, added new fiber laser processing equipment and became an ISO 9001:2015 certified company.

To this day, Basic Metals is still family owned and operated under Andy’s leadership, continuing the legacy that Don and Todd built. Billions of pounds of metal have been shipped across the United States, Mexico and Canada from Basic Metals, and the “People First” mentality that BMI was built on remains the cornerstone of the company today.
